Senate draws support for the bill to establish the Nigerian Peace Corps. The Senate Committee on interior had on Tuesday 18th of May 2021 made some revelations. The Senate said henceforth, it would not continue to fold hands and allowed insecurity to gain grounds in Nigeria.

The Senate agreed that it’s aware that there the shortage of security personnels, is  contributing to the security challenges the Nigeria is presently facing.

This was made known to the public by the Chairman Committee on of interior, Senator Shettima Kazeem. The Senator  said that the total number of security personnel, military, paramilitary and all law enforcement agencies in Nigeria was less than 500,000.

Reacting to the position of the Solicitor General of the Federation, Mr Dayo Apata, on the bill to establish the Nigerian Peace Corps and the hunters Council of Nigeria, Senator Shettima Kazeem gave his advice. According to Senator Shettima Kazeem, he said th there was need to take the issue of security seriously.

Senator Shettima Kazeem said they would “dance around”the suggestions of Mr Apata. In order to ensure that the two Bills are passed and asserted to.

Senator Shettima Kazeem further stated that Egypt has the population of 100 million. But it has about 2million security personnels. Nigeria on the other hand, has a population of 200 million but has only 500,000 security personnels.

Senator Shettima Kazeem continued by saying that Nigeria’s population would shoot to 450 million people by 2050. Making it the most populous black country in the world. He stresses that there was need to pass the bills to fill the gaps in security inadequacies.

In addition to what he said, he added by saying that the essence of governance was in order to provide security for the citizenry.

Hunters Bill is a new bill sponsored by Senator Biodun Olujimi. The Peace Corps Bill was introduced by the sixth, Seventh and Eight assembly. It was sponsored by Senator Ali Ndume. But was rejected.

The Peace Corps Bill is presently being sponsored by Senator Ali Ndume as a regazetted bill. Since President Muhammadu Buhari refused to assent to it.

The Nigerian Senate had earlier on invited the PCN for a public hearing. It was scheduled to take place today 18th May 2021. See the invitation below.
